Jackie McLean: New Soil at Blue Note 1959-63
McLean’s Vertigo was recorded in 1962 and 1963, but these sessions surprisingly didn’t see the light of day until 1980. Perhaps Blue Note viewed this material as old news, since McLean was still an artist in transition between the traditional and new. He was even more immersed in Free Jazz on both One Step Beyond and Destination Out! recorded just months later, and pointing toward the future. We’re partial to Vertigo’s ‘63 session because of the stellar lineup, with trumpeter Donald Byrd joining McLean on the front line, Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and a 17-year-old drumming wunderkind, Tony Williams, making his recording debut. Hancock and Williams would join Miles Davis’ Second Great Quintet three months later.
This is one of our favorite McLean tracks. Happy Birthday Jackie.
